Presentation Guidelines

If your Abstract is selected, here are some guidelines to follow in preparing your presentation.

  • Presentations should be 20 minutes in length, followed by a 10 minute question-and answer period. Presenters will have
  • access to an overhead projector, and a large screen projector connected to a UNIX or NT workstation running Pro/ENGINEER.
  • All Presentations can be submitted as a Microsoft PowerPoint 95 version 4.0, or PowerPoint 97 electronic file. Otherwise, a mail message will be acceptable.
  • Presentations should be 30 to 45 minutes in length, with a 5 to 10 minute question period. (Each presentation lasts 45 minutes.)
  • Presenters will have access to overhead and slide projectors
  • All slides must be submitted on A-size paper
  • Slide titles must be in 30 pt bold (Helvetica or Times)
  • Slide points must be in 24 pt (Helvetica or Times)
  • Do not use light colors such as yellow or orange
  • For color plots, use contrasting colors to ensure quality black & white reprint
  • Avoid clutter: A maximum of 4 points per slide is recommended
  • A presenter should submit additional text information concerning their presentation in a Microsoft Word document. This information will be included in the handouts.
  • Please practice your presentations before the NTPUG meeting. Even if it's just to check that you can complete the presentation in a 20 minute time slot.
  • Running through your presentation a couple of times, will give you confidence that you can complete your presentation on time, and have no surprises at the NTPUG meeting. With practice and familiarity with your presentation, it will be delivered much more smoothly.
  • Please do not read your presentation. Please know it well enough to use your notes to guide you through the presentation.
  • Presentations larger than 5 meg can not be uploaded to the website
  • Here are some suggestions for better presentations:

  • Don't rush your presentations, it's better to take your time and clearly explain less material in the 20 minutes you have, than to quickly gloss over too much material
  • Speak slowly and clearly and loudly, microphones will be provided, but even with their help, you cannot speak too loudly
  • Don't just read your slides, but explain the material on them using different words, and elaborating on their content with additional information
  • Even if you're really nervous inside, the audience won't know if you just speak clearly and slowly
  • If you make a mistake don't get flustered, you can correct it, or just continue on, the audience will not notice
  • Try to practice your presentation in front of someone, and get feedback someone else may be able to point out various body language signals such as poor posture, or saying "umm", or "uhh", that you would not notice yourself.
  • Another effective way to practice your presentation in anonymity, is to videotape yourself doing your complete presentation, and then watch it and critique it yourself for ways to improve
  • Don't be too "commercial" in selling your idea, services, company etc.
  • If you are a consultant, just giving a good presentation with quality content will gain enough publicity for you
  • Overt salesmanship, can turn off an audience, and is not recommended
  • Have fun! Enjoy yourself during the presentation, don't be too serious
  • Your presentations have great content, so if you just relax and explain the slides, everything will be fine
